We all love to feel and look good which means taking care of our bodies should be something we enjoy. The skin is one of the most important organs of our body which is why it’s so important to always keep it well moisturised. Due to climatic changes our skin can sometimes become to dry, oily and unappealing to the eye, however there are natural ways of keeping our skin health, one such way being through face masks which have the following benefits:
- Gives the skin a natural glow making it appear brighter.
- Softens the skin.
- Deep cleanses and refines pores.
- Lightens the skin.
- Removes excess oil.
- Maintains elasticity of the skin.
Exfoliators are great for cleansing the skin, and removing excess oil, it also removes dead skin cells and improves circulation. Skin exfoliators however should not be applied on sunburnt skin, skin that has cuts, open wounds or bites.
HOW TO APPLY EXFOLIATORS: using wet finger tips smear the exfoliator from the middle of your face outward and work into the skin in a circular motion for about 3-5 minutes. Remember to never exceed the rule of exfoliating more than twice a week. Face masks/exfoliators should always be rinsed with lukewarm water.
OILY SKIN: oily skin is caused by the over secretion of sebum. Characteristics of oily skin include:
- Enlarged pores.
- Acne, blackheads or pustules.
- Thick skin.
- Oily skin is also the result of unhealthy diets and lack of water.
MASK ONE: You will need:
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 3 Tablespoons of rooibos tea
- 3 ripe skinless apricots mashed
METHOD: Mix all the above ingredients together, and leave to set for a minute. Apply to the face and avoid the eyes. Leave for 20-25 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.
MASK TWO: You will need:
- 2 Tablespoons yoghurt.
- Half a ripe avocado.
METHOD: Mash the avocado well before adding the yoghurt, mix well and apply to the face. Leave for 15-20 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.
DRY SKIN: dry skin is due to lack of water and at times the lack of vitamin E and omega fatty acids. Characteristics of dry skin include:
- Lack of moisture.
- Taut feeling after being washed.
- Usually not prone to acne.
MASK THREE: You will need:
- 1 egg.
- 1 teaspoon honey.
- Half teaspoon rose water.
METHOD: Mix all three ingredients well before applying on the face. Leave for 15-20 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
MASK FOUR: You will need:
- Half a cup of grape fruit juice.
- 3 Tablespoons oatmeal.
METHOD: Blend ingredient to form a paste. Apply to face and leave for 10-15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.
NORMAL SKIN: normal skin is neither to dry nor to oily, it can be attained by eating the right foods and drinking enough water. Characteristics of normal skin include:
- Smooth and velvety.
- Retains moisture.
- Fine pores that are hardly visible.
MASK FIVE: You will need:
- 1 Tablespoon regular flour.
- 2 teaspoons honey.
- 1 egg white.
METHOD: Mix until a paste is formed then apply to the entire face avoiding the area around the eye. Leave for 10-15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
MASK SIX: You will need:
- 1 Tablespoon gram flour.
- 1 Tablespoon rose water.
METHOD: Mix well and apply to the entire face. Leave for 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
