Contouring and highlighting is like chocolate sauce on ice-cream, best together. Although it might sound easy most woman get these two makeup techniques totally wrong, either because they’re using the wrong method of contouring or they’re using the wrong color of contour stick.
What is contouring? Well it’s basically the process where a pencil, cream or powder that’s two times darker than your skin tone is used to define or reshape your face shape, nose, forehead, chin or cheekbones.
What is highlighting? Highlighting is when a pencil, cream or powder that’s two times lighter than your skin tone is used to emphasise the parts of your face that naturally catch the light.
Best highlighters for your skin tone: Here are a few examples of highlighters that work well with different skin tones.
- Fair skin: champagne tones
- Light-medium skin: pink-champagne tones
- Olive skin: golden tones
- Dark skin: teracotta tones
How to contour and highlight your face shape:
Okay so now that you know which highlighter to use for your skin tone, it’s time to do the actual contouring, well there’s a secret you should know, there’s one way or method that works for all face shapes and it’s called the 3-method, all you have to do is start from your hair line move down to your cheeks and then to your chin, make sure you have a three shape, this is probably the easiest way to contour, I know I do it and it works and besides celebrities like Kim Kardashian, kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Blake Lively swear by this method.
Always highlight in an inverted triangle under your eyes, the sides of your forehead, and the center of your chin.
